Encore Strings Birmingham was born in 2018 out of two intertwined passions: a lifetime of performance experience and a love for music education. At the time, I was seeking to establish a summer strings camp in Birmingham for young musicians, particularly for my daughter, who was 7 years old and eager to continue her string studies. While there were plenty of introductory music camps in the area, I noticed a gap—there wasn’t a dedicated program for string players who wanted to deepen their craft.
To create the camp, I needed a formal entity to manage funds and logistics. This led me to combine my vision for the camp with another cornerstone of my life: providing live music for special events. Encore Strings was the perfect way to merge these two worlds, giving me a platform to nurture young musicians while continuing to perform music for weddings and events, a passion I’ve pursued for decades.
A Lifetime of Musical Experience
Music has been a constant throughout my life, and weddings have always held a special place in my journey. Growing up in Hartsville, South Carolina—a town of just 8,000 people—opportunities to play live music were few and far between. However, I had the privilege of collaborating with my mother, an organist, to provide music for church services and weddings. These early performances instilled in me a love for creating memorable moments through music.
My career has since spanned countless weddings and events across various stages of life, from high school and college in Columbia, South Carolina, to graduate school in Chicago, and on into my professional life in Alabama. Over the years, I’ve performed at hundreds of ceremonies, developing a deep understanding of the role music plays in making an event truly extraordinary.
